StudentMarketing - new Affiliate Member of UNWTO!

World Tourism Organisation increases focus on Youth Travel and Tourism and welcomes StudentMarketing as a new Affiliate Member.

The youth travel market accounts for 196 million arrivals per annum.  It is currently worth 173 billion US dollars per annum and is expected to grow to a value of 320 billion US dollars per annum by 2020. The youth market’s growth and resilience during the economic downturn make it a significant contributor to the global tourism economy.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) is taking an increasing interest in youth travel as governments around the world recognise the positive social and economic impact that young travellers can have in a destination. To this end, StudentMarketing the leading youth travel research and business development specialist, was recently admitted as a new Affiliate Member.

Javier Blanco, Director, Affiliate Members UNWTO says,  ‘‘We are proud to count on the knowledge and experience of StudentMarketing in the field of global youth travel. Their work underlines the importance of the sector to the global tourism economy, but also highlights the lessons that can be learned from a highly innovative sector, with a keen interest in the responsible and sustainable development of tourism“.

“As our recent report The Power of Youth Travel explains, young travellers represent an important market for the future, not just because of the economic benefits they can generate, but also because they can make a real difference to the destination in cultural, social and development terms,” says Blanco. In addition to StudentMarketing UNWTO is working with other leading organizations in the sector to build on the global youth travel agenda began in 2011  (UN International Year of Youth).

Destinations that have integrated youth and student travel and tourism into their core tourism strategy, or developed specific initiatives to meet young travellers’ needs are already benefitting from these measures.  According to Samuel Vetrak, founder and CEO of StudentMarketing, “The youth and student travel segment can provide significant new business opportunities for all destinations and individual tourism stakeholders.  We are happy to join the UNWTO as an Affiliate Member and contribute to creating greater synergies between Global Tourism and Youth Travel, and offer our knowledge and expertise about this industry and market.”

More than any other market segment, young travellers are leading the way with innovation and responsible travel. Youth travel is dynamic and full of opportunities for destinations, tourism organisations, and businesses that recognise the potential.  However, market entry and development require specific knowledge and expertise to avoid expensive mistakes and disappointing results.  “Understanding the market is not always straight forward, and taking expert advice is really critical to success,” says Vetrak.

The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), a United Nations specialized agency, is the leading international organization with the decisive and central role in promoting the development of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. It serves as a global forum for tourism policy issues and a practical source of tourism know-how. Its membership includes 155 countries, 7 territories, 2 permanent observers and over 400 Affiliate Members.
